Title and Brief report of the work (max 300 words) |
The role of tomato RNA Dependant RNA Polymerase- 6 in Cucumber Mosaic Virus (CMV) and D satellite RNA induced plant lethality. My research addressed the question which has enthralled scientists for decades: what makes the non-coding D sat RNA to cause cell death in tomato? We found that, despite accumulating a significant amount of small RNA (which is indicative of strong susceptibility to CMV infection), rdr6 mutant tomato prevents cell death caused by D sat RNA while all other tomato cultivars failed. We also found that both wild type plants and rdr6 mutant tomato completely evade cell death when infected with a mutant D sat RNA having a variation in 3 nucleotides near the 3' end. |
