Fernando García-Arenal is Full Professor of Plant Pathology at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM). Born in Madrid (Spain) in 1952, Fernando García-Arenal graduated in Agricultural Engineering, and received his Ph.D in Agricultural Sciences from UPM. In 1978 he became a tenured Associate Professor at UPM, becoming Full Professor in 1983. As professor, he integrated at the Department Biotechnology. His research, as well as his teaching assignments, has been in the fields of Plant Pathology and Plant Virology. He was Deputy Director for Research at the Agricultural Engineering School (UPM) (1992-1997), Head of the Department of Biotechnology (2004-2007) and is currently Director of the Centre for Plant Biotechnology and Genomics UPM-INIA (CBGP).
He has been Visiting Fellow at Department of Plant Pathology, Cornell University, Ithaca NY, USA (1981-1983), Visiting Professor at Department of Ecology, Behaviour and Evolution, University of California, San Diego, USA (2001) and has served as expert in several National Commissions for science policy and science evaluation (CICYT, ANEP, CNEAI, INIA), and in Evaluation Committees of research institutions in Spain and other European countries.
His major research interests are understanding the processes that determine the genetic variation, structure and dynamics of plant virus populations, as well as the evolution of plant-virus interactions. He has published more than 120 scientific papers in highly reputed international journals in the fields of Plant Pathology, Virology and Plant Science. He has supervised 24 graduate students and post-doctoral fellows.
He has been or is a member of the editorial board of several scientific journals, including Virology, Journal of General Virology, Journal of Virology and Molecular Plan-Microbe Interactions, and has been PI in twenty seven competitive grants, including eight funded by international or EU agencies.
