D.V.R.Sai Gopal, PhD is a Professor and Head, Department of Virology, Sri Venkateswra University of Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh (India). Sai Gopal was born on 14 January 1960 in Tangutur, Prakasam district, Andhra Pradesh, India. He obtained his BSc from CSR Sarma College, Ongole, Andhra Univesity; his MSc with Plant Virology Specialization from Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, India; and his PhD from the SVUniversity in Plant Viral diseases. He worked as a short term fellow at IRRI, Phillipines and later joined as Scientist the Cardamom Research Institute, Myladumpara, Iddukki district, Kerala for a period of 1 year (1988-89) under Spices Board, Ministry of Commerce, Government of India, Cochin, Kerala.
Presently Dr. Sai Gopal is heading the department of Virology and Chairman, Board of Studies in Virology. He is the Co-ordiantor of Department of Science and Technology, Government of India “Promotion of University and Research Excellence (PURSE) programme” and also National Agriculture Innovation Project (NAIP) - CAC member in the body of Consortium Implémentation Commette (CIC) on “Novel strategies for Molecular Diagnosis of Plant Viruses” of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Government of India, New Delhi and is currently one of the Indian partners in the Erasmus Mundus Action 2 project BRAVE (Plant Virology in the new era - Breeding for resistance) (2013-2017). He has published 45 peer-reviewed international journals research papers, 56 national publications, 6 books and 1 lab manual. He was awarded with the Best Virologist award, Best Scientist award, Best teacher award, Fellow award in Biotechnology and Pharmacy. He has 4 national projects from Government of India as a Principal Investigator from University grants commission (UGC), Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and Defense Research Development Organization (DRDO). He is Editorial board member, Reviewer for journals, a member of several international and national scientific societies, selection board member in several state and central government organizations and research institutes in the field of Virology.
